Gisela Huhn Obituary

Gisela Herta Huhn, 89, passed away peacefully into the arms of her God, on October 22, 2022.

Gisela was born November 27, 1932, in the then declared “free city” of Danzig, to Wilhelm and Frieda Maertins. Gisela, her mother, grandmother and two brothers survived a refugee camp experience in Copenhagen, Denmark.  Afterwards, they were reunited with family in Freiburg, Germany. Gisela met Rudi in Freiburg and they married in December of 1951. They ultimately immigrated to the US in 1957 and settled in Chicago Heights, Illinois.

Gisela was a wonderful mother who, always thoughtful, was a kind and supportive listener, with a shining smile.  She had many friends and relatives whom she wrote often, sending beautiful handwritten cards in calligraphy.

Gisela enjoyed ceramics, flower arranging, reading, in-depth conversation and sleeping in.

Gisela was a devoted member of the Lutheran Church community in Chicago Heights and Champaign, Illinois, then, in Sun City West, Arizona. She was a long-term member of the German- American Dank club.

She was preceded in death by her husband Rudi and will be missed greatly by her family; 2 daughters, Helga Eichelberger (Brian Eichelberger) Edith Matesic (Mike Swindle), and son Herbert Huhn; 3 cherished grandsons, Grant Matesic (Corinne Matesic), Philip Pfenninger (Linda Pfenninger), Brian Matesic (Sybil Zachariah); and 5 precious great-grandchildren; Katherine and Lincoln Matesic, Ella and Filippa Pfenninger, and Zachariah Matesic.

A celebration of Gisela’s life is planned for Nov. 12th, 10:30am., at Friendship Lutheran Church of Joy, 3601 S. Duncan Rd., Champaign, IL 61822.

Interment will be at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, Vollmer Rd. in Flossmoor, Illinois.

Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
