After graduating from Caldwell High School, he attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas.  In 1965, he enlisted in the US Air Force and was sent to Lackland Air Force Base for basic training.  He spent time in Viet Nam and South Korea before being sent to Chanute Field in Rantoul where he was released from active duty in 1968 at the rank of Sgt.

Gary joined the Urbana Police Department in 1970 where he served for 20 years.  During his tenure, he was recognized several times for his efforts in serving the public.  In 1977, he entered a burning and smoke filled structure to ensure the safety of the residents.  In 1985, he was commended for his efforts in apprehending an armed robbery suspect.

After retirement from the Urbana Police Department, Gary worked for University Asphalt until his retirement from that job in 2008. For many  years, Gary  volunteered his time at the Urbana American Legion Post 71 and VFW Post 630 where he was a lifetime member of both organizations.    He helped with many of the breakfasts and dinners and other activities to raise money to support all the activities of these veteran organizations including the VA Hospital in Danville.  He also drove the American Legion antique fire truck, “Yankee Dandee”  in numerous local parades.
