Charles Young Obituary

Charles Richard Young, MD (age 86) died peacefully in his home on Monday June 18, 2018 surrounded by family following a long illness.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at Mattis Avenue Free Methodist Church in Champaign. Pastor Herb Coates will officiate. Visitation will be held prior to the memorial service from 10:00-11:00 a.m., at the church.

Charles was born on March 31, 1932 in Flint, MI to Charles Wesley and Esther Louise (Strawbridge) Young. His father died when “Chuck” was age 2 and thus he was primarily raised by his mother and sisters Joann (Cleveland) and Ruth Helen Young.

He met Charlotte Joyce Nissly while attending Greenville College (now University) in Greenville, Illinois; they were married on July 1, 1955 after he started medical school at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He progressed through internships at Flint, MI and Norwich, Conn, eventually completing a psychiatry residency at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, KS. He moved his family to Champaign-Urbana to work at the University of Illinois McKinley Health Service in the early 1960’s. He retired after 35 years from the U of I.  In addition, he maintained a private practice that continued several years following his retirement from McKinley. He also taught a variety of classes on campus and enjoyed a 6 month stint in New Zealand working in psychiatry for the government health service.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 62 years, Charlotte, and children Steven (Mary) of Mt Vernon, IA , Bruce (Judith) of Spring Hill, KS, L. Jill (Jim) Morse, of Knoxville, TN, and David (Gloria) of Golden, CO. He is also survived by his sister Joann Cleveland of Spring Arbor, Michigan as well as 17 grandchildren and 5 great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Ruth Young, and an infant son, Keith Wesley Young.

Chuck loved his family dearly and was an excellent husband to his wife and father to his children. Chuck was a good athlete and always adventurous, enjoying outdoor activities such as mountain climbing, sailing, running and bicycling well into his later years. Chuck loved a good football game in the back yard, still playing with the family after a Thanksgiving meal well into his 80’s.

He was a leader in his church, Mattis Avenue Free Methodist Church, and regularly taught classes on Sunday mornings. Chuck loved the Lord and taught his family to memorize scripture, be selfless in interactions with others, and to live a life of godly holiness. His fun attitude, great sense of humor, ready smile, and hilarious laugh will be sorely missed by all who knew him.  He leaves a great legacy of faith to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. We take comfort in the fact Chuck is now living it up in heaven, reveling in the presence of his Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 4:7 says,” I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

The family wishes to thank the excellent caregivers at Midwest Home Care and Carle Hospice who provided loving care for dad in his last days.
