"Tom Robert Ward, a devoted husband, father, and professor, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at the age of 84.

Born in McKessport, Pennsylvania, on August 5, 1941, Tom’s life was shaped by a deep love of music, history, and education. He earned his PhD in Musicology from the University of Pittsburgh and went on to build a distinguished academic career as a tenured professor at the University of Illinois.

Tom specialized in 15th-century Central European music and its role within medieval universities—a field to which he dedicated decades of passionate research and teaching. In addition to his scholarly work, he served as the coordinator of graduate studies and mentored countless students through their academic journeys.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Una Ward; brother, James Ward Jr.; sister, Rosemary Ward; and stepson, Matthew Coe.

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Sheryl Ward; his children, David Ward and his wife Jaime Ward; Nate Ward, his wife; Adam Coe and his fiancé Thomas Dubisky; and Jordan Coe Lauter and her husband Aaron Lauter.

To his family, Tom will be remembered not only as a studious and brilliant mind, but also as a man of warmth, mischievous humor, and unwavering love. His presence filled rooms with both intellect and laughter, and his memory will be cherished always.

In accordance with Tom’s wishes, there will be no public service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to National Public Radio (NPR), an organization he supported and enjoyed throughout his life."
