Susanne L. Massell

Susanne L. Massell, 95, of Urbana, passed away at 10:35 a.m.
on Sunday, August 13, 2023 at Evergreen Assisted Living in
Champaign, surrounded by her family.
She was born on August 24, 1927 in Piatt County the daughter
of Elza Ray & Pearl (Friend) Hawkins. She graduated from
Bement High School, Class of 1945. Susanne married Jack
Massell on June 18, 1949 at First Methodist Church in
Champaign, Illinois. Jack passed away on October 1, 2018.
Susanne is survived by her daughter- Penny (Thomas
Harnsberger) Massell of Urbana; sons- Michael (Shelley)
Massell of Cedar Rapids IA and Mark (Kimberly) of Crete, IL;
6 Grandchildren; 11 Great Grandchildren; brother- David (Kay)
Hawkins of Monticello, IL.
She is preceded by her parents, husband, Jack; brothers- Elza
Ray Hawkins,Jr. and Donald Hawkins; sisters- Mary Louise
Wetmore and Dorothy Danenhower.
Susanne enjoyed quilting, painting and sewing. She was a
member of the Southeast Art League of South Holland, IL. and
the quilt club in Dolton, IL. Thank you to the Marion Bentley
Family for all the care they gave her during her teenage years.
Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday,
August 19, 2023 at Woodlawn Cemetery, in Urbana, IL.
Nathan Montgomery will be officiating. Memorial
