Maxine Kaler Obituary

Maxine Kaler, 86, passed away peacefully at home on July 10, 2025, after a long and courageous
battle with cancer.
Born on September 23, 1938, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. On June 15, 1960, she married the
love of her life, James (Jim) Kaler. Together, they made Champaign-Urbana their home for over
60 years, where they built a life centered on family, friendship, and the arts. Maxine and Jim
shared a deep appreciation for the arts and were longtime supporters and patrons of the Krannert
Center for the Performing Arts.
Maxine was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jim, her daughter Jill Kaler, and her
granddaughter Allison Zak.
She is survived by her children: Lauren (Brewer), Bruce, and Lisa (Zak); and her cherished
grandchildren: Natalie (Brewer), Danielle (Brewer), Sierra (Rousakis), Marissa (Zak), Avery, and
Ethan. Maxine’s legacy lives on in the lives she touched through her humor, and enduring
strength.
Her family will remember her as a devoted mother, grandmother, and friend—a woman of quiet
grace who loved deeply and gave selflessly. She will be profoundly missed.
A private memorial service will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made
in Maxine’s memory to the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts or a cancer research
organization of your choice.
