Lea Schmidt Obituary

Lea Weddle Schmidt entered Heaven on Good Friday, April 7, 2023 after a valiant battle against cancer and fibrosis.  She was surrounded by her family.  Lea was born in Monticello, Illinois in 1944 to Edward and Anna Weddle. Lea was raised in Monticello where she attended the Nazarene Church with her family every Sunday.  She graduated from Monticello High School and married the rock in her life, John Schmidt, in 1963.  She was a dedicated mother and wife who always took an interest in her children’s well-being.  She taught them to love God, care for others, and do their best.  She sewed for her family, cooked and canned for them, volunteered in their schools, and taught them to be kind to all.  She would often take them with her when visiting nursing homes.  For over 40 years, she showed her love for people and the work of the Lord at Faith Crusaders Church in Urbana by teaching Sunday School, cleaning the church platform, teaching sewing and cooking classes in the church’s day school, and inviting people to church.  She was also an excellent vocalist who shared her talents by singing specials in church. She is survived by her husband, John Schmidt of Mahomet, her children, Scott (Laura) Schmidt of Champaign, Vickie (Rick) Jones of St. Louis, and Kimberly (Marsh) Jones of Urbana.  She is also missed by her beloved siblings:  Cindy Ponder, Debbie Cody, Tony Weddle, Wiley Weddle, and Sue Smith.  She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings:  Rita, Edna, Frank, and Marcy.

A visitation for this Servant of the Lord will be held on Friday, April 14 from 5 – 8 pm.  Her Funeral Service will be on Saturday, April 15, at 11 AM.  Both will be at Faith Church of Urbana, 2111 N. Willow Road.  Memorials in honor of Lea may be made to Faith Church of Urbana
