Judith Carol Hummel, 83 of Urbana, passed away Saturday May 10, 2025, at home surrounded by her family. Judith was born January 23, 1942, at Frostburg, Maryland, the daughter of Arvel L. and Mary (Raley) Minick. She married John W. Hummel August 1, 1964, in Frostburg, Maryland and he survives. Judith is also survived by her children, John William Hummel, Jr. of Savoy, Lisa Marie Gaylor (Robert) of Englewood, Ohio, Mark Devon Hummel of Urbana, Lori Rene Younker (Steve) of Genoa, Illinois, grandchildren, Ashley White (Max), Mary Catharine Hummel, Bobby Gaylor, Ethan Gaylor, John Hummel, Jack Hummel, Rachel Younker, Benjamin Younker, one great grandchild, Ryan White, sisters, Virginia Hostetler of Finzel, Maryland, Cecelia Sandifer of Hague, Virginia, Rose Marie Hutzell of Meyersdale, Pennsylvania, sister-in-law Rita Crowe of Edgewater, Maryland, and brother-in-law Duane Hummel of Grantsville, Maryland. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, James Minick, her sisters, Mary Margaret Shockey and Lillian Konetzka, her sisters-in-law, Denise Hummel, Doris Cleveland, and Carol Ways.
Judith graduated from Catherman’s Business School. She was employed at Rocket Center, WV from 1961 until she married John on August 1, 1964. She was a stenographer for the US Bureau of Mines, College Park MD while John was a graduate student at the University of Maryland. The family moved to Urbana IL in 1966. Judy was employed part-time as a temporary office worker on campus, and later she typed theses for other graduate students while John completed his PhD.
Judy continued as a homemaker in New Carrollton, MD (1969-70) and Adelphi, MD (1971-76) while John was a faculty member of the University of Maryland. The Hummel family (now six, including two sons and two daughters) returned to Urbana in 1976 where John began employment with the USDA-ARS. Judy became an employee of USDA-NRCS and was a Human Resources Specialist for most of her federal career, retiring in 1996. Over the next 14 years, she used her expertise in federal retirement benefits to council other employees as a part-time employee of Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Judy is a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Urbana. She is a member and past president of both the Exchange Club of Urbana, and Chap. 0348 of the National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE). Judy had an interest in painting and was an art student at the University of Maryland. She was a true multi-tasker, balancing her career with homemaking, church, and children’s school and sports activities. She was a volunteer at the Spurlock Museum and a member of The Illinois Club. She and John participated in the Gourmet Club and the Supper Club. And she made the best potato salad.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S Philo Road, Urbana from 4 o’clock to 6 o’clock pm, and the Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 708 W. Main St, Urbana at 10 o’clock am. Fr. Anthony Co will officiate. Burial will follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery, Rt. 150, Mayview IL. Deacon Cliff Maduzia will officiate.
