John Cross, 86, of Champaign, Illinois passed away December 18, 2023. A memorial service for the family was held on December 23, 2023 at Renner Wikoff Chapel in Urbana.

John was born October 28, 1937 in Urbana, the son of Everett and Lillian (Carter) Cross. He married his wife, Gloria Hollingsworth, on July 3, 1959. She survives. Also surviving are their children, Michael Cross, Kimberly Cross Murray, Jennifer Cross Walther, and son-in-law David Walther. Grandchildren Kaitlin Murray, Grayson Walther, and John Walther also survive.

John was the owner of H.S. Grindley Co. in Savoy which has been a staple in the Champaign-Urbana community since 1919. Often referred to as “Mr. Grindley” by his customers, he loved nothing more than going to work each day. He did his best to take care of his customers’ needs and concerns, and appreciated each and every one of them. John taught his children to be resilient, appreciate simple pleasures, and to understand the importance of being a helper in this world. As such, he leaves the legacy of a life dedicated to helping others and just being a tremendous human being. He didn’t know a stranger, was honest beyond words, and loved his family dearly. We are so grateful for the time we had with him and the imprint he has made on our lives. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and customers.
