Dorothy Moffitt Obituary

Dorothy E. Moffitt, 99, of Urbana, passed away peacefully on Monday January 22, 2024, surrounded by family at the home where she had lived for the past 65 years. She was born in Peru, Indiana, on December 19, 1924, the daughter of Marvin and Helen (Jenkins) Erb. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Dr. James T. Moffitt, children James Moffitt of Honolulu, Thomas (Zora) Moffitt of Chicago, Mary Moffitt of Chicago, and Patricia (John) Koenitzer of Greenville, SC, grandchildren Stephanie (Dan) Gallagher and Dan Moffitt, and great grandchildren Madelyn and Ben Gallagher.

Dorothy graduated from Peru High School and Indiana University, Indianapolis. She worked as a Registered Nurse at Indiana University Hospital, St. Louis University (SLU) Hospital, and at a Seattle Hospital while Jim served in Korea.  Dorothy met Jim on a blind date while she was nursing, and he was in dental school at SLU. They were married 74 years ago on January 28, 1950, at St. Frances Xavier College Church at SLU. They moved to Urbana in 1953 and began raising a family. Dorothy enjoyed attending concerts and performances with her husband at Smith Music Hall and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Illinois as subscribers for many years. Dorothy looked forward to annual trips to Hawaii to walk the beach and enjoy the tropical flowers. At home, she loved to watch the backyard birds and tend her houseplants. Dorothy enjoyed writing letters and always remembered everyone’s birthdays with cards and notes. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Urbana. Dorothy was a very loving and caring person. Her family was the most important thing to her—she will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:30 p.m. Friday January 26 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 708 W. Main St., Urbana. Rev. Fr. Joel Phelps will officiate.
