Obituary

Ft Smith Arkansas. On April 26, 2023 Don C. McMillan,95, previously of Urbana, IL passed away peacefully. Don is survived by his loving wife, Delores of the past 21 years
and his sons Cary (Rande) Lincolnshire IL,Mark (Annette) Park Ridge IL, and Chris (Judy) Hartsburg IL.

He adored and loved being with all 5 of his grandchildren, Dan, Katie, Jenny, Jack and Dana McMillan.
Don was born February 24,1928 in Utica NY to Chester Daniel and Helen Cary McMillan. He was raised in Cleveland until his Mom passed suddenly in 1942. He then graduated from Staunton Military Academy in Staunton Virginia. He attended Ohio State with the returning GIs from WWII, earning a degree in accounting from Case Western Reserve University. He was promoted to Captain in the US Army and led a tank division in combat from 1952-1953 during the Korean War.
After the war he began his career in public accounting but decided to try something different and joined IBM in Cincinnati in 1956. It was in Cincinnati where he met Barbara Crush, a registered nurse.  They were married in 1957 and began a wonderful 43 year marriage. Barbara gave him 3 sons and moved all over the Midwest for his career.
In 1971 Don, a CPA by then, accepted the role of Vice President of Finance for M & W Gear of Gibson City IL. A year later Barbara and the boys moved to Urbana IL. Don later accepted the role of Assistant Vice President of Finance for the University of Illinois System.
Don and Barbara loved Illinois sports (Basketball and Football season tickets ) and all shows at Krannert and the Assembly Hall. Don took up flying and earned his private pilot license. He also gained a Masters in Finance from the University.
William Staerkel then recruited Don to be the Vice President of Information Systems for Parkland Community College.  When he retired he was asked to teach computer programming at Parkland. He loved teaching those kids.
Don was very respected by his sons for the caring guidance he provided each of them for their whole lives. But he will be most remembered for how much he enjoyed life. Nothing better than breakfast with his pals at the Courier in Urbana or lunches at the White Horse on Green street. He loved joking, laughing and telling lots of stories.
As a Grampa he loved entertaining the whole family whether on trips across the country and beyond or simply in his living room. He loved watching tv programs especially football, golf even Gunsmoke, Wheel of Fortune and his favorite news programs.
Barbara passed away in January of 2000. While on a trip to Barcelona in 2001, he met Delores DeWit from Fort Smith Arkansas.  In January of 2002 they were married and lived a wonderful life these past 21 years. Years filled with trips, family and adventure.
Don has now rejoined Barbara at Mt Hope Cemetery in Urbana.
