Charles Wilborn Huegy passed away September 29, 2022. Charles was born on December 4, 1927 in Christopher, Illinois. He was the son of Harvey Huegy and Hilda Latowsky. Charles graduated from Urbana High School in 1945 and attended the University of Illinois for undergraduate studies in economics graduating in 1949. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War stationed in England at Burtonwood Air base, the largest in the world at the time and used to supply Berlin which had been blockaded. After the war he attended Michigan University and received a Master’s Degree in economics, studying with many of the leading scholars of the time including Kenneth Boulding who introduced him to the Quaker faith and conflict resolution. It was also at Michigan that he met his wife, JoEllen Blythe. Then he began doctoral studies at Indiana University receiving his Ph.D. degree in economics, and began teaching economics. He subsequently taught at Earlham College, Eastern Illinois University, San Jose State University, and California State University at Fullerton. A curious mind, good memory and broad interests are the key skills of the scholar, and Charles was extraordinarily gifted in all of them. He worked with the California consulting firm of Cleary Hitt, where he helped to elect Andrew Hinshaw Orange County Assessor and subsequently congressional representative. He was active in the incorporation of the City of Irvine in California and helped prepare the first economic model for the city. He also started several leagues for boys to play baseball in the new city and was a tireless advocate for constructing more ball fields. Charles also designed a series of geodesic domes for which he received three patents. Recently he was working toward a fourth patent on a geodesic double dome design. Charles also painted in oils, and wrote poetry both serious and humorous. He was predeceased by his wife and is survived by two sons, Joseph Huegy of Cary, North Carolina and Dave Huegy of Irvine, California.
