Charles R. "Bob" Gatsche Obituary

Charles Robert "Bob" Gatsche, 88, passed away on February 3rd at 10:29 a.m. in Urbana, Illinois. He was born on March 6, 1936, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, the son of Albert and Ann (Dugan) Gatsche.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, and their children: Michael (Laura) Gatsche of Champaign and Beth Gatsche of Urbana. He was a proud grandfather to Katherine (Derek) Gaffney, Chris (Shay) Gatsche, and Ryan Gatsche.  He was a beloved great-grandfather to Wyatt and Jameson Gaffney. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Komlenic of Erie, Pennsylvania. He was an uncle to eight nieces and nephews.

Bob graduated from Altoona Catholic High School before joining the United States Air Force, where he was stationed at Chanute Air Force Base. During this time, he met the love of his life, Barbara, and together they built a beautiful life.

Bob started his career in insurance. He was an agent at National Life and Allstate Insurance Company before establishing his own agency with Cox, Gatsche, Lowry, and Marsh. He went on to own Gatsche Insurance in downtown Urbana for ten years. He and his wife owned Bunny’s Tavern from 1991 until 2003 where they built lifelong relationships with many friends, creating lasting memories. Bob became known as “Big Bunny Bob” to all.

Bob had a passion for golf, playing many rounds at Urbana Country Club, where he formed lifetime friendships. He also loved deer and duck hunting, spending many memorable times at Indian Gardens Duck Club. But more than anything, Bob cherished his family, hosting cookouts and dinner parties where his warmth and humor filled the room.

Bob was instrumental in establishing Special Olympics in Champaign County while serving as Grand Knight at the Knights of Columbus 891.  Bob was a member at the American Legion Post 71, CU Elks 2497 and a lifetime member at the VFW Post 630 Auxiliary.

For the past thirty years, Bob and Barbara have called Naples, Florida home, where they created even more treasured memories. Bob was known for his outgoing nature, quick wit, and masterful joke-telling. He had a heart for helping others and never hesitated to lend a hand to those in need.

Bob will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the joy of knowing him. His love, laughter, and generous spirit will live on in the hearts of those who knew him best.

A special thank you to the following who assisted in providing care over the past three years: Chrissie Flemmings, Meadowbrook at Clark Lindsey & the entire Therapy Team, Carle Hospice Team, Danville VA Home Based Primary Care Team and Deja Smith.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, February 23from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the VFW Post 630, 1303 E. Main Street, Urbana.
