Cathy S. Peterson

Cathy (Bartels) Peterson passed away Saturday, July 17, 2021, at her home in Tolono, Illinois. 

She was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin the daughter of Junior and Virginia (Morgan) Bartels on August 30, 1958. 

Cathy was fortunate enough to grow up in the quiet little town of Plano, Illinois and graduated from Plano High School in 1976. She was a member of the Girl Scouts, played girls summer softball, and played the flute in the school band. As a teenager she was an avid roller skater at the Fairway Roller Rink in Sandwich, IL where she worked behind the counter for a short time before attending Eastern Illinois University. 

On April 23rd, 1983, she married James (Jim) Peterson of Geneva, IL. They had two daughters, Katie and Carrie and lived in Aurora, IL. The family later moved to the Champaign-Urbana area in Central Illinois where both Cathy and Jim were volunteer storm chasers. Cathy worked at Walmart for 10+ years, then Olde Tyme Meat and Deli in Savoy, IL as the Assistant Manager. She was also a CNA home health aide. She loved watching The Game Show Network, Wheel of Fortune, Big Brother, and Hallmark Movies on TV. 

Cathy was preceded in death by both of her parents and her husband Jim. She is survived by one sister, Cheryl Bartels of Tolono, IL, two daughters, Katie Peterson 

of Tolono, IL and Carrie Peterson of Champaign, IL and her beloved dog Sissy who told Cathy good-bye at just the right time. 

She is also survived by her step-mother, Mary (Knief) of Genoa, IL. In addition, she is survived by her Aunt Betty (Morgan) Wetter of Celina, Ohio, and Aunt Kathleen (Bartels) and Uncle Marvin Pursell of Rock Falls, IL Uncle Richard Balousek of Verona, WI and many, many cousins. 

Finally, she is survived by her adopted family and long-time friend, Amanda Thomas of Tolono IL including four grandkids Brandon, Ashley and Greg of Tolono, IL and Mariah of Urbana, IL. 

Prior to cremation, a visitation will be held at Renner-Wikoff Chapel located at 1900 Philo Road, Urbana, IL on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the local food bank at The Giving Place, 113 N. Bourne St. Tolono, IL 61880.
