William Lee Karr, 88 of Urbana, died at 11:30 p.m. Monday, September 6 at home. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 11 at Grace United Methodist Church, 2004 S. Philo Rd., Urbana with visitation from noon to 2:00 p.m., Rev. Tom Corum officiating. Military Rites will be accorded by VFW Post 5520. Renner-Wikoff Chapel, Urbana is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Karr was born September 26, 1921 in Henning, the son of William and Mary Harbaugh. He was raised by William Joseph and Martha Ann Martin Karr. He married Ruth Lee Griffin on October 12, 1945 in Urbana. She preceded him in death on September 30, 2001. He is survived by sons; Roger Karr of Urbana and Kenneth Karr (Sharon) of Danville, two granddaughters, Sydney Oliveira (Nate) and Shelby Karr; one great grandson, Duncan Oliveira. He is preceded in death by a son, Glenn Karr.
Mr. Karr attended Rantoul Grade and High School where he was a stand-out athlete in football, baseball and track. He was a service worker at the University of Illinois for 38 years, a member of VFW Post 630, American Legion Post 71 and the D.A.V. He was commissioner of the E.I. Baseball League and active for many years, was an avid Cubs, Bears and Illini fan. He also worked for the U of I Athletic Association. Before his illness, he helped his son at New Town Flowers during holiday seasons and enjoyed traveling, especially to Las Vegas. Mr. Karr served in the US Army during WWII and received the Purple Heart.
