Obituary

Wallace Harlan Ewing, 76, of Urbana passed away at 9:30 a.m., Monday, June 4, 2012 at Carle Foundation Hospital. A reception will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., Friday, June 15, 2012 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana. A memorial service will be held following the reception at 1:00 p.m., also at the funeral home. Rev. Marilyn Brewer will officiate. Burial will be held at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Mr. Ewing was born June 13, 1935 in Urbana, Illinois to parents Wallace and Irma (Harlan) Ewing. He married Phyllis Powell on August 23, 1959. On September 7, 1971, he married Redith Adkisson; she survives.

Also surviving are sons; Brian Ewing (Teri), Jay Ewing (Anne Claire), daughters; Joan Fuller (Jim), Melissa Bunge (Scott), grandchildren; Maris, Caleb, and Abigail Ewing, Elizabeth Bunge, and sister; Margaret Givens. Wallace was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Ewing graduated from Urbana High School, and was a self-employed entrepreneur.

Known as Wally, Jr., he lived a typical kid's life in the forties. In the 50's, he spent two years in Germany as part of the Army installation there. Much later in his life and still interested in all things German, he bought a German Shepherd dog and gave him commands in German. "Wolf" loved him and was beloved by the family. Wally always had a new enthusiasm. He constantly thought of new businesses or property to buy.

Having great love for the outdoors, he took the two older kids camping and boating. He always had to have a boat whether it was fishing in the Gulf Stream near Charleston, SC, or riding up and down the coastal waterway in Florida. When the two younger kids came along, he said he was too old to camp, but he continued to boat.

Wally loved to travel. He went to California, Colorado, Minnesota, Nevada, and Washington state. Favorite cities included Charleston, SC, New Orleans, LA, and Bangor, Maine. Most frequently in later years he travelled to Florida. Wally, his wife and sister visited England and Ireland where he kissed the Blarney Stone. Needless to say, he already was adept at telling stories and exaggerating events. The twinkle in his blue eyes and his teasing will be sorely missed.
