W. Gordon Marigold, 81, died peacefully at 6:28 P.M., Sunday, November 25, 2007 at Carle Arbours in Savoy.

He was born May 24, 1926 in Toronto, Canada, a son of Walter James and Elma Beharriell Marigold. He married Connie Young in Toronto on August 22, 1953. She survives.

Gordon Earned a BA and PhD from the University of Toronto. He earned an MA from Ohio State. He studied in Munich, Germany. Professor Marigold taught at University of Western Ontario, Trinity College Schools, University of Virginia, and at Union College Barbourville, KY. At Union College he was a Department Head, Division Chairman, and College Organist. He retired as Professor Emeritus of German in 1991. Gordon and Connie moved to Urbana to take advantage of the U of I Library and the offerings of the School of Music.

Professor Marigold was an internationally known scholar of German Baroque Literature and Music, author of five books, countless articles in learned journals, hundreds of reviews of German Literature for Germanic Notes and Reviews, and countless reviews of CD's of organ music and organ building for The Diapason. He was a recipient of many research grants for study and research in Germany.

Gordon was a member of MLA, AGO, AAUP, Freunde mainfrankischer Kunst und Geschichte, Bamberger Historischer Verein, Germanische National Museum, Knorr-von-Rosenroth Gesellschaft, Internationaler Arbeitskveis F. Deutache Berock-Literatur, and other professional organizations.

A Regimen Eucharist will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday at Canterbury House 1011 S. Wright St. Champaign. Rev. Timothy Hallett will officiate. Renner-Wikoff Chapel 1900 S. Philo Rd. Urbana is handling arrangements.
