Viola M. Creighton, 89, of Urbana, died at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Provena-Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Funeral Mass will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Urbana, with Father Joseph Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana. A visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., one hour prior to the funeral mass on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
Mrs. Creighton was born March 23, 1921 in Ste. Marie, Illinois, the daughter of Lester and Mae Grace Barthleme. She married Woodrow Wilson Creighton on July 14, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri. He preceded her in death on April 17, 1955. Viola is survived by two sons; Larry Creighton, of Florida and Brice Creighton, of California, three daughters; Patricia Weikel, of Maryland, Joyce Kraus (Michael), of Indiana, and Cheryl Gantz (John), of Urbana, 16 grandchildren; Rena Hunkeler (Jeff), John Creighton, Gail Rivera (Steve), Frank Weikel, Tracey McCord (Doug), Jason Kraus (Carol), Heather Kraus, Matthew Creighton (Yvonne), Seth Creighton (Monica), Erica Creighton (Paul), Tom Gantz (Sakie), Katherine Darr, Daniel Gantz (Theresa), Aubrey Gantz, Bethany McCord, Jenna McCord and 20 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Bernice Bechman.
Mrs. Creighton graduated from Newton High School in Newton, Illinois, and then graduated from cosmetology school. After working as a beautician, Viola became a homemaker. She later went on to work in the Benefits Center at the University of Illinois for ten years. Viola was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and sang in the church choir. She also sang in the international barbershop group, Sweet Adelines. Along with singing, her other interests included plants and the St. Louis Cardinals. Viola was a devoted grandmother and loved all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much.
