Obituary

URBANA, IL- Vincent O. Greene, 92, of Urbana, IL, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2015, at his home in Canterbury Ridge. He was born August 19, 1922 at Wapella, Illinois, the third son of Veronica and Thomas Greene. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Emmett and James. He is survived by his three nieces, Donna McCraith of Longmont, CO, Anne Mack of Denver, CO and Michelle Oerther of Louisville, KY. He is also survived by members of the Hays family, longtime friends who he often referred to as his Illinois family.

Vince followed his father and brothers to the University of Notre Dame, graduating with a degree in Accountancy in 1943. He had a lengthy career as an accountant at the University of Illinois beginning in 1952 with the Auditing Division and retiring in 1982 from the Office of Budgeting and Planning.

Vince enjoyed managing the family farms in DeWitt and Livingston counties and his favorite past time was reading the Wall Street Journal, which he continued to do until his eyesight began to fail in the past couple years. Until about four years ago, Vince would take his daily walk to the Urbana Library, where he would read the Journal and other financial publications and visit with other library patrons.

A long time member of St. Patrick's Church in Urbana, Vince had a deep passion for the value of education and was able to establish the Vincent O. Greene Scholarship in Mathematics and the Vincent O. Greene JBT Scholarship benefiting Agriculture students. In addition, Vince assisted several young people with their educational expenses and took great pleasure in visiting with them and offering advice. He was always happy to "give a leg up" to a young person.

Vincent choose cremation with interment in the Greene family plot at St. Mary's Cemetery in Bloomington, IL. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Renner-Wikoff Chapel & Crematory, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana, is handling arrangements.

The family extends a special thanks to the staff of Canterbury Ridge, the staff of Age Wise Care Management, and his caregivers from Alpha Health Professionals and Harbor Light Hospice for making his last years comfortable.
