Vera R. Vogel, 89, was born on March 22, 1924 in Saint Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Otto and Eva Liebmann-Woelfer. She married Raymond S. Vogel on August 3, 1957 in Saint Louis and seeking a better life they moved to Champaign, Illinois. Her husband preceded her in death on July 10, 1955.

She is survived by her sister Meta Ruth Krueger of El Centro, California along with several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Vera joined Wesley United Methodist Church of Urbana on March 11, 1973 and became an integral part of the church through her activities including serving as an usher. Later, while she continued to serve as an usher, she served as chairperson on the usher board.

Vera started her professional career in Saint Louis as a legal secretary and continued to be a secretary after moving to Champaign. In 1975, Vera opened her own secretarial service where she served the needs of professionals as well as University of Illinois students and she continued to provide these services until she retired in April 1996.

Both Vera and Ray were active outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers and the enjoyed traveling both in the United States and abroad. Vera especially loved her home in the woods and would often share her knowledge of plants and wildlife with family and friends. Vera also did not hesitate to join others in song and dance and could often be heard laughing joyfully. We also fondly remember Vera's generosity and humor. She touched the hearts of many and is already greatly missed.

Vera was very generous and donated her time and finances to several different charities and organizations including the Champaign County Humane Society, the Humane Society of the United States, the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club, and Wesley United Methodist Church just to name a few.

Vera passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 27th in her home surrounded by friends. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, Urbana, IL.

Memorial contributions in Vera's name may be made to the Champaign County Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA). This was an organization that was near and dear to her heart. The office is located at 154 Lincoln Square Suite C, Urbana, IL 61801.
