Thelma K. Castle Dawson, 82, of Champaign passed away at her home Tuesday, January 26th, 2016. A visitation will be held Sunday, January 31st from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 1st at the funeral home, with Pastor Chris Repp officiating. Burial will be held at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign.
Mrs. Dawson was born November 29, 1932 in Champaign, Illinois to parents Major Clyde and Thelma Gladys (Swihart) Deem. Thelma married her first husband, Martin Castle on March 7, 1952. He preceded her in death September 19, 1985. She later met the second love of her life, Earl "Ed" Dawson Jr., and married him in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 4, 1989. He preceded her in death November 28, 1995.
Mrs. Dawson is survived by her son, Jerry Castle (Cheryl), of Camargo, grandchildren: Tammy Spaenhower (Jodi), of Tolono, Ammie Sollers, of Sidney, Jamie Castle (Melissa), of Tolono, sister, Betty Busch, of Niles, six great grandchildren (with one more on the way), and on great great granddaughter on the way. Her parents and three sisters preceded Thelma in death.
After graduating from Champaign Senior High School, Thelma began her career as a waitress. She worked at Walgreen's Drug Store and Malt Shop and Denny's Family Restaurant.
Thelma enjoyed taking pictures, getting together with family for any occasion, traveling with her sister, Betty, and recently took up fishing with friends. She was a woman that was always full of life and was very determined to remain self-sufficient. She was dedicated to being a grandmother who was always there for her grandchildren. Two years ago she adopted a dog, Patches, who became her best friend. She also loved a good shade of red lipstick. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Champaign.
