Russell D. Carr, age 91, of Urbana, died Wednesday, November 19, at Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana.
Funeral services will be at Sidney Christian Church at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 22 with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. Pastor Barry West and Pastor Kent Hickerson will officiate. Internment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Sidney. Arrangements are being handled by Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 South Philo Road, Urbana, Illinois.
Mr. Carr was born January 11, 1917 at Clark, Missouri, the son of James Lloyd and Mayme Lyons Carr. He married Oneda Mathis August 9, 1941 and she preceded him in death February 28, 1981. He married Petrea Walker June 20, 1987 and she preceded him in death on November 27, 2006. He is survived by daughters Carol and Henry Wright of St. Joseph, Camilla and Paul Freedlund of Agoura Hills, California; son Cornell and Louise Carr of Peoria, stepdaughters Linda Green of Urbana, Dee Wamsley of Taylorville, six grandchildren, five step grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He is also preceded in death by a brother, T.J. Carr.
Mr. Carr attended Moberly, Missouri Junior College and graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia with bachelor's and master's degrees in education. He served in the US Navy as Radio Technician Second Class (T) in the Pacific during WWII aboard the USS Typhon. He was a principal and math teacher at the Republic and Branson Missouri Public Schools in Missouri and the Sidney Grade School in Illinois. He was a member and former Elder of the Sidney Christian Church and a former member of the First Christian Church of Champaign. He loved children and would spend lunch time and recess at school playing in the gym or on the playground with his students. He loved music all his life, playing the violin and singing in a men's quartet. He had a strong faith in God and raised his family to love the Lord. Memorials may be made to the Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana.
