Obituary

Roy J. Charles, 93, of Urbana passed away at 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 in Urbana.

A visitation will be held from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2016 at the Renner-Wikoff Chapel in Urbana. Funeral Services will follow in the Chapel at 1:00 pm. Burial with full military services will take place at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Champaign.

Roy was born on March 3, 1923 in Urbana to parents Royal "R.J." and Marie (Jolly). Three brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.

On January 6, 1950 Roy married Phyllis Joan "Joann" Baker in Homer, IL, she survives. Also surviving are their three children, Carol Baumann (Terry) of Flower Mound, TX, Kirk Charles (Victoria) of Monticello and Andrew Charles (Linda) of Sidney. Ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren also survive him.

Roy was a graduate of Urbana High School. He served in the 4th Marine 24th regimental weapons company in the Pacific theater during WW 2. Roy served in the battles of Roi-Namur, Iwo Jima, Saipan and Tinian and was awarded a Bronze star "for heroic achievement in action against the enemy on Saipan."

Roy worked as a machinist for the University of Illinois School of Life Sciences for thirty-two years. He was a member of First United Methodist of Urbana, the Marine Corp League and a long time leader of Boy Scout Troop 10. He was an Illini basketball fan and belonged to the Rebounders Club.

Roy was always happy outdoors; gardening, fishing, hunting, and camping. He and Joan also loved to travel. They made it to all fifty states. His greatest joy was sharing his time and providing experiences for his family. He was the best - husband, father, grandpa, and great-grandpa.

Semper Fidelis.
