Ronald Hubert, 67, died Saturday, January 11, 2014 in Marion, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana. There will be a ritual performed by the Department of Illinois VFW at 7:00 p.m., during the visitation. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 17th at the funeral home, with Illinois VFW Chaplain Fr. Dan Ebker officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign, with the Champaign VFW Post 5520.
Mr. Hubert was born November 8, 1946 in Champaign, Illinois to parents Donald and Jean (Rosenberger) Hubert. He married Sandra Cox on October 2, 2006, in Urbana; she survives.
Also surviving are children, Ashley Hubert, of Chicago, Greg Peters , of Farmer City, Tim Meredith, of Mahomet, Heather Cox, of Urbana, Chad Hubert, of Texas, Shantel Hubert, of Nevada, siblings, Donald and Connie Hubert, of Urbana, nephew, Kyle Hubert, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Ron was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Tammy Hubert.
After graduation, Ron worked as an electrician with the Electrical Workers Local #601. During his lifetime membership, he served as President of the Local #601 for eight years.
Mr. Hubert served in the United States Army from April 1966 until April 1968, during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, W-Bronze Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal W-60 Device, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Purple Heart
Ron was a prominent member of the VFW. He joined the Champaign County VFW Post 5520 in 1994. He was also a member of the DAV Chapter #8, American Legion Post #71, and the AMVET Post #3.He was the President of the Champaign County Veteran's Administration, Past Commanders Association,Champaign County Veterans Assistance Commission and All State District Commander in 1995-1996. He also served as Voice of Democracy Chairman, Aid to the State Commander, National Veterans Employment and Training Committee, Homeless Veterans Director, Hospital and VAVS Director, State Color Guard, and Public Relations Director. He was elected to the office of State Surgeon for the 2012-2013 term. Ron was appointed National Aide-de-Camp in 1996-97 and served on the National Youth Development Scholarship and Recognition Committee. He was unanimously endorsed for the high office of Junior Vice Commander, Department of Illinois, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States in June, 2013. Because of his relentless service to veterans and their families, he was honored as the Home Town Hero for Champaign-Urbana in 2012.
