Obituary

Robert Edward "Bob" Anderson, 83, of Urbana passed away Friday, April 2, 2010 at home. Mr. Anderson was born January 27, 1927 in New Kensington, Pennsylvania to Edward Fletcher and Mary Eliza (Stauffer) Anderson. He married Helen (Harmsen) Hoard on February 14, 1957, in Bensenville, IL. They divorced in 1968. Surviving are a daughter, Karen Fox Folk of Urbana, IL and her husband Michael and their four children, Anna Fox, Kenyon (Hilary) Fox, Joshua (Silvia) Folk, and Peter (Cecilia) Folk; a daughter, Diane Eschbach of Corpus Christi, TX, and her husband Robert and their two children, Stephen (Kristin) and Jonathan; a son, Joseph Anderson of Goodyear, AZ, and his wife Gayle and their three sons, Joey, Joshua, and Alex; a niece, Judy Hale of Apollo, PA; a nephew, Carl Hale of Las Vegas, NV; an uncle, Harry (Lois) Stauffer of Cheswick, PA and their two daughters, Karen Stauffer and Guila (Bruce) Holtmann, and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Hale; a brother-in-law, Robert Hale, and a grandson, Jeffrey Anderson. Mr. Anderson was confirmed in the Lutheran Church and graduated from Aspinwall (PA) High School in 1945. He joined the Army, serving with the 511th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance in Tokyo, Japan. Then known as "Andy," he served in the Korean War and in Chicago as a Nike missile technician. He left the Army in February 1957 and joined Burroughs Corporation (later Unisys) as a field engineer. He maintained and repaired computer systems in the Chicago area and moved back to his parents' home on New Texas Rd near Pittsburgh, PA, in 1967. He retired in 1986. He had a life-long passion for photography and was always experimenting with the latest technology. Other hobbies included fishing, camping, astronomy, optics, guns, computers, foreign films and shortwave radio. After his retirement, he took several cross-country road trips each year to visit his children and grandchildren. Bob was a quiet man with a quick wit. After moving to Canterbury Ridge retirement community in 2003, he was known for his dedication to walking. He was a member of the Natural Areas Study Group. While he missed his Pennsylvania hills, he enjoyed the benefits of a college town by attending many performances at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. A memorial service is planned for July 17th in Urbana. Memorials may be made to public television, WILL-TV, or the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.
