Obituary

Richard Ray King, 78, of Urbana passed away peacefully surrounded by family at 11:15 a.m. Friday, April 7, 2017 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Funeral services will be held on April 12 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Urbana; Rev. Robert Rasmus officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign. Visitation will be held on April 12 at 10:00 a.m. also at the church.

Richard was born on July 22, 1938 in Peoria. He graduated from Urbana High School in 1956. Richard married Nora Kay Long on October 5, 1963 in Urbana, she survives. They raised two children during their 53 years of marriage. Surviving are his son; Michael (Jacinda) King, daughter; Jennifer (Rob) Kowalski both of Urbana, three grandchildren; Kiel (Alana Greenwood) King, Andrew Kowalski and Miranda Kowalski, and one great grandchild; Grayson Layne King. Also surviving are sisters Maryann Hansen of Northbrook and Barbara E. King of Portland, Oregon. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Ray E. King and Ruth (Johnson) King, step-mother; Octjelena King, and one sister; Carol King.

Richard was dedicated to his family and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved trains, enjoyed camping with his family and was an amazing photographer. He worked for over 40 years at Worden-Martin Buick GMC in Champaign as a mechanic and, after retirement, as a part-time courtesy driver. He was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. His dedication in volunteering for St. Matthew Lutheran Church was highlighted by his mission trips to New Orleans to help rebuild neighborhoods impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
