Obituary

Portia Brownell Miller Cureton, born January 1, 1917 in Ruskin, Florida to Admer D. Miller and Clara Cushman Miller, died Thursday, March 18, 2010. She attended Denison University where she received a Bachelor's degree and the University of Illinois where she received a Master's degree. She taught physical education in high school in Cincinnati, Ohio. During World War II, she taught physical education at the University of Illinois. She also taught at the Champaign YMCA for 15 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Urbana, Illinois. She was president of the University of Illinois Women's Club and an active member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority for more than 70 years. She loved her summer home in Door County, Wisconsin, which she shared with family and friends for 53 years. Portia married Thomas Kirk Cureton on June 26, 1941 in Orange, New Jersey. They were married for 51 years. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wendell and Lester, a twin sister, Sylvia, and her husband Thomas in 1992. They are survived by their children, their spouses and six grandchildren: Elizabeth Cureton Chaldy, Kirk Jeffreys Cureton and wife Deborah Andert Cureton, Richard Dozier Cureton and wife Catherine Harrington Cureton, Scott Schueneman, David Cureton (Megan), Quinn Cureton, Colin Cureton, Karen Cureton and Haley Cureton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Urbana, Illinois. A memorial service will be held for Portia at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 27, 2010 at Clark-Lindsey Village in Urbana. Renner-Wikoff Chapel & Crematory 1900 S. Philo Rd.
