Obituary

Phyllis Oury Mast, 99, of Urbana, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025 surrounded by family.

She was born March 18, 1926, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to Ethyl (Evard) and Clarence Oury, while her parents were living in Flint, Indiana. She grew up in Peru, Indiana, with her brothers Stanley, Glenn, and Dan.

Phyllis met her beloved husband, Edward "Ed" Mast, as a schoolgirl, and their friendship blossomed into a romance during their college years. They were married on December 21, 1947, and shared 69 years together before Ed's passing in 2016.

A graduate of Manchester College, Phyllis began her career as an elementary school teacher. Alongside Ed, she built a life centered on faith, family, and education. They moved to Urbana in 1952, raising seven children in a lively and loving home.

Phyllis often described her family as amazing, and considered each of her children a gift from God. She took great pride in their accomplishments, especially in their education, and supported them in countless ways. She also delighted in her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cherishing every moment with them.

She is survived by her children — Philip, Kim, Eric, Dan, Anne, Alan, and Jeff and their spouses — as well as by 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ed; her brothers Stanley, Glenn, and Dan; and her grandson, Matthew.

A service celebrating Phyllis's life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Urbana on Wednesday September 24 at 11 AM. Friends are invited to attend a luncheon at the church following the service. The burial will be at Bremen Municipal Cemetery in Bremen, Indiana on Thursday September 25 at 1 PM.  The family also plans a celebration of Phyllis's life, and what would have been her 100th birthday, in the summer of 2026 at the Mast Homestead in Syracuse, Indiana.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Urbana.

Phyllis's life was a testimony of love, perseverance, and faith. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
