Obituary

CHAMPAIGN: Dr. Paul Eugene Mayes, 85, of Champaign died at 8:30 p.m. Friday (December 12, 2014) surrounded by his family at CU Rehab and Nursing in Champaign. A memorial service is being planned at Faith United Methodist Church, 1719 South Prospect Avenue, Champaign, IL 61820. Details will be announced at a later date. Paul was born December 21, 1928, in Frederick, OK, the son of Robert Franklin and Bertha Ellen (Walter) Mayes. He married Lola Mae Davis on June 4, 1950 in Norman, OK. Surviving immediate family includes his beloved wife of 64 years Lola; his children Gwynne McQueen (Mike) of Urbana, IL, Linda Mitchell (Wayne) of Champaign, IL, Stuart (Linda) of Homer, IL, Patricia Stroh of San Jose, CA, Steven (Julie) of Geneva, IL, David (Jennifer) of Hampton Falls, NH; his grandchildren Melissa Mihalj (Mark), Kate McQueen (Michael Stirn), Kelli McQueen, Betsy Shallenberger (Logan), Ben Mayes, Megan Reynolds (Allen), Laura McQueen, Stephanie Rideout (Kenneth), Paul, Brendon and Philip Mayes (Samantha), Patrick McQueen, Jack, Jessica, Julia, and Jenna Mayes; and great-grandchildren JJ Reynolds, Mya, Corbin, and Cayson Mihalj, and Levi and Maeve Shallenberger. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Walter, Wilmot, and Harold. Dr. Mayes graduated from Tipton (OK) High School 1947. He received his BSEE from University of Oklahoma (Norman, OK) in 1950, his MSEE from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) in 1952, and his PhD from Northwestern University (Evanston, IL) in 1955. Paul joined the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Illinois in 1954 and served as faculty member in the department until his retirement in 1993. He became Director of the Electromagnetics Lab in 1990 and served in that role until he retired. Four decades of research, teaching, and advising resulted in being an acknowledged international authority regarding the theory and development of broadband and electrically small antennas. He authored the textbook Electromagnetics for Engineers (1965) that was adopted as a graduate-level text in the US, Canada, and Latin America. He advised more than 11 PhD and 45 MS candidates and was awarded 13 patents. He was honored as an IEEE Fellow in 1975 for "contributions to the theory and development of log-periodic antennas" and was a member of Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, and Eta Kappa Nu. In addition, he chaired the annual Antenna and Applications Symposium at Allerton Park in Monticello, IL from 1977 until 1993. He consulted to more than 10 industrial firms and was the founder and owner of Tele-Comm Company in Champaign, IL. Paul was a charter member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Champaign. When the church decided to expand, he served as co-chair of the building committee and his efforts resulted in the church becoming the first church in Illinois to be certified "green" by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2008. He enjoyed woodworking, hiking, camping, garden railroading, and Illini football and basketball.
