Newton W. Pirtle Jr., 79, of Normal, formally of Urbana, died 9:10 p.m., July 22, 2010 at Danville VA Hospital.
Funeral services will be 12:00 noon, Monday, July 26, 2010 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel & Crematory 1900 S. Philo Rd. Urbana. Pastor Larry Sauter will officiate. Burial will be in Danville National Cemetery. A visitation will be held 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.
Newton William Pirtle Jr. was born December 13, 1930 in Chicago a son of Newton William and Frances Bessie Hybert Pirtle.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda ( John) Moore of Leroy; a son, Michael ( Sue) Pirtle of Normal; a sister, Audrey Cantwell of Tuscola; a brother, Joseph Garvin of Bethany, OK; four grandchildren, Shilee (Ted) Fowler, John William Moore, Grace Pirtle, and Grant Pirtle; and three great grandchildren, Gage, Kegan, and Piper.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Mr. Pirtle served in the US Army during the Korean War. He received a National Defense Service Medal, Combat Medical Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Emblem with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and Korean Service Ribbon with 5 Bronze Service Stars.
Newt worked as a truck driver for the Teamsters Local 26 for twenty years and was a member of the Champaign VFW post #5520.
