Obituary

Nellie Carter Long, 92, of Urbana, passed away quietly on July 11, 2015. She leaves two of her three children: Patricia Lees of Philadelphia, PA and Douglas Long of Wilmot, NH. Her husband, Donald E. Long, former Chief of Police for Urbana, and her son, Eugene, preceded her in death. She had three grandsons, Matthew, Benjamin and Carter, and four great-grandchildren, Nellie, Benjamin, Hunter and Holden. She also leaves dozens of family members in Champaign/Urbana.

Nellie grew up in Southern Utah, as one of twelve children. Her parents, Horace and Madge Carter, were descendants of early Utah pioneers. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She leaves friends and family all around the country.

Graveside services will be held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 16 at Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign. Renner-Wikoff Chapel & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

We want to thank the staff at the Champaign County Nursing Home for taking good care of her for the past two and a half years. Alzheimer's took her memory and her ability to care for herself, but she still made jokes with the caregivers. She was kind and gentle, even in the grips of this horrible disease.

In lieu of flowers, she asked that donations be made to the missionary fund of the LDS Church in Champaign or Urbana. She also supported food banks and the Alzheimer's Association.
