Nadine Christena
Houston
Oct 21, 1920 — Dec 20, 2015
Nadine Christena Banister Houston, daughter of Blanche Rose and Leonard Dixon Banister, was born October 29, 1920, in Kansas City, Kansas, and died Sunday, December 20th, 2015, in Champaign Urbana, Illinois, at the age of 95.
Nadine graduated from Kansas University and earned a master's degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois. She met her husband to be Chester W. Houston at the U. of I., married in 1948, and was married for 61 years until his death in 2010. They lived for decades in Providence, Rhode Island, where Nadine was a librarian in the Kingston, Rhode Island, school system and Chester a professor of bacteriology at the University of Rhode Island.
After retirement, however, they chose to return to the place where they met, and lived contently for decades on South Anderson, before moving to Clark-Lindsey Village.
Nadine Houston was a creative whirlwind: a master seamstress, photographer, as well as an accomplished calligrapher and painter, among many other handicrafts. She was a sweet, cheerful spirit who loved her Lord and people. She will be missed everywhere she was known.
There will be a gathering of her family and friends for fellowship at 9:00 A.M. Wednesday, December 30th, at the Clark-Lindsey Village Theatre Lounge. Her memorial will follow at 10:00 A.M. in the same location with a brief graveside service afterwards at Rose Lawn Cemetery.
Memorials may be donated to: the Chester W. and Nadine C. Houston endowment fund II for the University of Illinois foundation, or the Chester W. and Nadine C. Houston biology library endowment.
She is survived by her nephew Jim Houston of Tolono, nieces Elaine Danny of San Diego, CA, Dr. Carrie Valentine of Ocean Springs, MS, Rev. Lindsy Ireland of Tacoma, WA, and nephew Leonard Dixon Livesay of Hot Springs Village, AR.
