Muriel H. Maxwell, 91, of Urbana passed away at 4:17 a.m., Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. A visitation will be held Friday, September 13, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana. A funeral service will be held immediately following the visitation at 1:00 p.m., Friday at the funeral home, with Pastors Tom Myers and Dennis Skinner officiating. Burial will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Champaign.
Mrs. Maxwell was born December 28, 1921 in Crooked Creek Township, Cumberland County, Illinois to parents Elmer A. and Mary R. (Cramer) Sanford. She married Donald L. Maxwell September 8, 1940 in Warrenton, Missouri. He preceded her in death March 2, 2000.
Survivors include son, Jerry Lee Maxwell (Karen), of Dunedin, Florida, daughters, Candy Abbott (Cody), of Seymour, Marilyn Myers (Tom), of Danville, sisters, Helen Brown and Betty Hurd, of Sidney, seven grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren. Muriel was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Donald Lee Maxwell, Jr., one grandson, Jerry Lee Maxwell, Jr., three sisters, Pauline Starr, Evelyn Louks, and Anita K. Norton, and one brother, Elmer A. Sanford, Jr.
Mrs. Maxwell worked for Busey Bank for 23 years. She started as an assistant cashier, and retired as the customer service officer.
Muriel was a member of the Church of Homer until 1952. She became a member of the First United Methodist Church when she and her family moved to Urbana, where she was active with the church's school for children and as a church trustee. She was also a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service and the Home Bureau.
