Obituary

Mildred Spitler Johnson, 91 of Clark-Lindsey Village, Urbana, died at 10:45 a.m. Sat., Feb. 23 at MeadowBrook Health Services, Urbana. Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday March 1 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1203 W. Green St., Urbana and Graveside Services will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Putnam Cemetery, Putnam, Illinois. The Rev. Dr. Howard White will officiate. There will be no visitation. Renner-Wikoff Chapel, Urbana is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Johnson was born March 31, 1916 in her family's home near Montrose, Illinois. She was the only daughter of John Clyde and Henrietta Downey Spitler. She married Walter Miller Johnson on June 19, 1949. He preceded her in death January 4, 1998. Survivors include several cousins.

Mrs. Johnson was a 1934 graduate of Urbana High School where she was co-valedictorian. She graduated from the University of Illinois and received her Master of Social Work Administration from Tulane University. At the time of her retirement in 1971 she was Assistant Professor with the Jane Addams School of Social Work, University of Illinois. Prior to that time, she had worked in children's and family private agencies in Georgia and Illinois. She also served in administrative and supervisory positions with the Illinois Department of Mental Health, Children's Division, and later as a consultant with the Division of Child Welfare, Department of Children and Family Services.

Mrs. Johnson was the oldest member of Wesley United Methodist Women. She served on the Wesley Foundation Board of Trustees, the Wesley Foundation Corporation. She has been active in various community organizations and served on the Advisory Board of the Illinois Children's Home and Aid Society, the Cunningham Children's Home Board, and Mercy Hospital's Hospice Advisory Board. She was an advisor for Alpha Kappa of Zeta Tau Alpha Chapter in different capacities over a period of years. She was also a member of Senior Citizens Committee of Champaign County.

Among her awards were the Effingham County GOODYEAR Conservation Award, the Fred H. Turner Award, and a national award for being "Outstanding Advisor" among the Zeta Tau Alpha Chapters and Honorary Corporation Member of Wesley Foundation. She served as president of the University of Illinois Women's Club and of the Fortnightly Club of Champaign-Urbana and was a member of the President's Council at the University of Illinois.
