Max was born on October 8, 1924 in Deland, IL to parents John and Gertrude (Sparrow) Lukens. They preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were three sisters and seven brothers.

On September 1, 1956 max married Mildred Coad in Hidalgo, IL. She survives. Also surviving are their children; Julia (Robert) Supple of Sanford, NC, Warren (Marcy) Lukens of Augusta, KY, Don Lukens of Urbana, Lawrence Lukens of Urbana, eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Max attended Champaign Central High School, while still in school he was drafted to the United States Army and served in World War II, earning two ribbons and two medals. After being honorably discharged he started at JM Jones (SuperValu), where he worked for thirty-one years, retiring on his birthday in 1989.

He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene New Day. Max worked hard and was dedicated to his work and being a caregiver to his family; he was a whole heart kind of man who gave all he had to whatever he was working on.

Max enjoyed working on puzzles, reading the Bible, singing and sharing funny songs and sayings with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed going on multiple vacations throughout his life with the most memorable vacation being going to Alaska for 6 weeks with his "honey" upon his retirement.

He was a selfless person and is going to be missed by all who knew and loved him. Memorial Contributions may be made in Max's memory to Mayo Clinic or to The Church of the Nazarene.
