Masyl (Macie) Brown, peacefully passed away of natural causes at 8:55 p.m., June 13 2013 in Urbana, Illinois. She was 88.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 20, from 2 to 3 p.m., at St. Patrick's Church, 708 W Main in Urbana, Illinois. A funeral mass officiated by Father Joel Phelps will begin at 3 p.m. Following mass there will be a celebration of life gathering and meal provided by the Woman's group of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, at the Parish Center next door.
Macie was born June 3, 1925 to William and Verna McClain. She married Edward Brown of Niagara Falls, New York, on October 15, 1944. He died June 25, 1988.
Macie is survived by her five daughters KT (Kathleen) Turner, Terry Moreau, Sharon Fitzgerald (Mark), Jeanne Holy (Richard Borovec), and Vicki Brown, her fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her only brother Harry McClain (Wilma), innumerable nieces and nephews and extended family.
Before getting married Macie worked as an operator at the Illinois Bell Telephone Company. While raising her family she was very involved with Girl Scouts and served as a leader for many years, and was an active member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Patrick's Church. In the early 1970s she worked at the University of Illinois as a laboratory assistant in the agronomy department and in later years for Campus Parking.
Macie was an artist. Her mediums included ceramics, photography (for which she won many awards), oil painting, writing short stories, and acting. At the young age of 82 she had a cameo roll in the 2009 movie Act Your Age, which was filmed in the Champaign area.
