Obituary

Mary C. "Mickey" Tanner, 87, of Urbana, died 4:05 P.M. Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at Meadowbrook Health Center, Clark-Lindsey Village, Urbana. Services will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Renner-Wikoff Chapel & Crematory 1900 S. Philo Rd. Urbana is in charge of arrangements.

She was born July 22, 1920 at Washington Park, Illinois, the daughter of Roy W. Crawford and Bessie Connour. She married Wells M. Tanner on July 14, 1951 at the home of her uncle and aunt, Enos and Mary Phillips, in Urbana. Wells survives.

She is also survived by a sister, Helen Atwood, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ivan Crawford and Leroy Crawford, and a sister, Dolly Boling.

She served in the United States Navy in World War II. She was a bookkeeper at Robeson's Department Store in Champaign, the State Hospital in Manteno, Illinois, the Illini Union, at the University of Illinois and for a brokerage firm in Syracuse, New York.

She was an active member of the Northminster Presbyterian Church while she and Wells lived in Indianapolis before returning to Urbana. She and Wells attended many annual reunions of the shipmates and spouses of the USS Wichita and the USS Tuscaloosa where they made many wonderful and dear friends.

She will be remembered by her family and friends for her kind and generous spirit and her sincere concern for others.
