Obituary

The "wise woman of our clan," Marjorie More Harlan, died Tuesday, March 19,2008 at her home in Clark-Lindsey Village, Urbana, 10 days before her 99th birthday. Marjorie was born in Grand Junction, Colorado, on March 29, 1909, to Carrol Tallman and Edith Gullette More. She married James Rogers Harlan in St. Louis, MO, on Sept. 10, 1950. Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Patricia Harlan-Marks, son-in-law Stephen Harlan-Marks, grandsons Timothy and Christopher, Christopher's wife Caroline, 5 nieces and 1 nephew. Marjorie's husband, parents, sister Elaine More Schaal, and brother C. Kenneth More preceded her in death.

Marjorie was an intelligent, insightful, independent thinker. She was raised in the tradition of civic minded and politically active women, and continued as a role model for the next generation. Marjorie graduated with B.A. and M.A. degrees from Ohio Wesleyan University and Washington University (St. Louis, MO).

A dynamic career woman, Marjorie worked first as a school psychologist and then as a social worker in children's agencies in St. Louis, Peoria, and Champaign. She was fascinated by the diversity of human experience, and throughout her life worked for change that benefited others. Her investment in social justice was reflected not only in her career, but also in her involvement in community organizations, including: League of Women Voters, Women's Club of the Univ. of Illinois, U. of I. International Hospitality Committee, Community United Church of Christ, and resident committees at Clark-Lindsey Village.

Marjorie had a love for the mountains though she lived on the plains. She and her husband, Rogers, celebrated opportunities to travel, maintaining close ties with family and friends, and appreciating the wide variety offered by the natural and human world.

Marjorie was a source of graciousness and wisdom. Her family was blessed by her immense support, guidance, and love. Her nurture and love were also extended to her "family" of friends and colleagues . Marjorie and Rogers opened their home and their hearts in such a way as to welcome strangers as friends. Throughout her long life, Marjorie remained active in the present tense, interested in family, community, and the wider world.

The family wishes to acknowledge the love and care provided by friends, community members, and medical support teams. A special note of gratitude to health aides: Diana, Brandy, Ada, and Julia, and to Carle Hospice nurse Jodi.

There will be a private burial at Pennington Point Cemetery (IL). A memorial service to celebrate Marjorie's life will be held Sun. May 25, 2008 at 3pm at Clark-Lindsey Village. Rev. Mike Mulberry will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community United Church of Christ or the the Friendship Fund at Clark-Lindsey Village.
