Margaret L. Haltiwanger, 94, formally of Urbana, died on October 10, 2017 in Wilmington, NC.
A funeral service will be held in the mausoleum chapel at Mt. Hope Cemetery, 611 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Champaign on Monday, October 23, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Jerry Nichols officiating.
The daughter of Howard E. and Essie Mae Levitte, Margaret was born in Buel Township, MI on October 21, 1922 and was raised in Croswell, MI. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1945 with a BS degree in Home Economics. She worked on the food service staffs of the Women's City Club of Detroit, MI and the Union Club of Cleveland, OH prior to moving to Champaign-Urbana in1953 to supervise operation of the Colonial Room at the Illini Union. It is there that she met her husband of 54 years, John D. Haltiwanger. She continued her work at the Illini Union until they began their family. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Champaign, served on the boards for C-U Children's Theater, Cunningham Children's Home and the C-U Symphony Guild, and was involved in many social groups. Margaret loved to share her passion for good food and entertaining with others. She loved to plan a party and was a gracious hostess.
Margaret was predeceased by her husband, John, her parents and her brother, Keith Levitte. She is survived by her two daughters, Rae Ann (Gary) Matthews of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, and Lynn (Glenn) Peck of Rochester, NY, two grandchildren, David and Megan Matthews, one niece and two nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 210 W. Church St., Champaign, IL 61820. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 South Philo Road, Urbana. Expressions of sympathy for the family may be offered at www.renner-wikoffchapel.com
