Lorraine Marie Acevedo, known as Cathy to friends, family, and colleagues, passed away suddenly Monday night, April 7 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Illinois. Cathy was born March 18, 1959 in Corona, California, the daughter of Onias Acevedo and Consuelo Aguirre. Cathy graduated from Corona High School, attended California State Long Beach and received her Master's and was a PhD candidate at UCLA in clinical psychology. She began working at the University of Illinois Counseling Center in 1990, worked for a period of time in Carle Clinic Pediatrics, and returned to the Counseling Center as the Therapeutic Services Coordinator. Cathy remained in the Counseling Center until she accepted a position as Associate Dean in the Office of the Dean of Students. Cathy was an extremely active and effective advocate for campus diversity and the recruitment and the educational success of students of color. She was passionate about all students but particularly underrepresented students. Cathy was lively, vibrant and a true phenomenon.
