Lelia Dorothea Scott, 86, died peacefully at home on May 8, 2008. Born on October 27, 1921 in Newcomb Township, she was the daughter of Fred and Vira Mitchell Hazen. She graduated Mahomet High School and Illinois State Teachers College. Dorothea and Paul Malcolm Scott, Jr. married on November 4, 1945 at Shiloh Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by their children, Katherine Scott Reising, Anne Scott Welles, Nancy Scott Sitterly, Dan Scott, Laurie Scott and Jane Scott Tevis, grandchildren Erin Reising Peerenboom, Andrea Reising, Morgan Allers, Thomas and John Sitterly, Chase Scott, William and Jeffrey Tevis, one great-grandchild, Aunika Allers and brothers Keith and Kenneth Hazen.
Dorothea was an elementary school teacher, a devoted daughter, loving wife and mother and later helped others working for Family Services and the American Red Cross. She belonged to the Mahomet United Methodist Church for over 60 years where she taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Women's Club, Eastern Star, WSCS, and University Club, active in the P.T.A., the Cooperative Extension Service and the American Legion Auxiliary of which she served President. She enjoyed bridge club, ballroom dancing, walking and yoga clubs, was a member of the Back Door Players and founding cast of the Nine Gal Tavern. She loved her garden, especially her roses, was a great cook, warm hostess, and a life-long learner. She was a teacher of good, strong values and a model of perseverance through difficult times. Mahomet was her home and her life. She leaves us with love and many enduring memories.
A memorial service will be held on July 26, 2008, time and location to be announced. Contributions may be sent the Mahomet American Legion Auxiliary Post #1015, American Red Cross, Champaign, and Carle Hospice.
