Lawrence "Larry" O. Place, 84, of Savoy, formerly of Urbana, died at 6:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the Champaign County Nursing Home in Urbana. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday May 24 at Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana. Officiating clergy is Rev. Chris VonHolten, Rev. Janet Espeseth and Major Brendon Manglos. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial with military honors by American Legion Post 71, Urbana will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Urbana immediately following the funeral service.
Mr. Place was born on December 15, 1929 in Bowman, ND, the son of Fred and Marie (Vanderham) Place. He married Eileen Humes on August 8, 1958 in Danville and she survives. He also survived by daughters, Tanya Jo Robinson of Cedar Rapids, IA, Janet Espeseth and Marcia Humes both of Barron, WI. He is also survived by sisters, Lillian Krocak, Kathleen Crapson and Margaret Sands, also nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dale Place.
Mr. Place served in the United States Air Force where he served two tours in England, Germany and Okinawa, one term in Greenland, Japan, Korea and Vietnam in the Weather Department. He retired in 1968 after twenty one years with the rank of Staff Sergeant. After retirement from the military he worked as a bus driver for Urbana School District for twenty years. He was a member of Living Hope Foursquare Church and American Legion Post 71, Urbana.
