Katherine E. Gaines, of Champaign, passed away at 5:01 a.m., Friday, August 18, 2017 at Carle Foundation Hospital. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 22nd at Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana. Pastor Chris Smithey will officiate.

Mrs. Gaines was born February 26, 1923 in Urbana, Illinois to parents Henry and Viola Bell Hutson. She married Marvin B. Gaines May 14, 1942 in Perryville, Missouri. He preceded her in death May 9, 1998. Survivors include three children: Carolyn Pike (Larry), of Mahomet, Illinois, Joan Allison (Mickey), of Gays, Illinois, and Debbie Douglas (David), of Homer, Illinois. Katherine is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Six siblings and one son, Marvin D. Gaines, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Gaines was a member of the Curtis Road Church of God, where she faithfully attended every Sunday until her health declined. She enjoyed crocheting, doing yard work and sitting on her "porch," which was actually just a bench outside the door of her room at the nursing home.
