Obituary

Julia Ellen Hubbard, 72, of rural Platteville, Wisconsin, formerly of Urbana, Illinois, died on May 12, 2009 at Southwest Health Center, Platteville, Wisconsin. She was born on June 25, 1936 in Champaign, Illinois. Julia graduated from Urbana High School with honors, Illinois State Normal University (now Illinois State University) with a degree in Music Education. She taught in Ottawa, Illinois and Attica, Indiana, then received a Master of Music in Voice at the University of Illinois where she studied with Bruce Foote. She also worked at the University of Illinois, the Urban League, and the Champaign County Center on Aging. In 1995 she received the Senior Worker of the Year Award from the Urban League. Julia was a member of the Oratorio Society at the University of Illinois for many years, Sigma Alpha Iota music honorary, sang in "My Fair Lady" with the Danville Light Opera Company, Danville, Illinois, was a member of the Women's Club of Champaign-Urbana, Evening Club, Mozart Club, and the Hubbard Trio (Frances Hubbard, Carol Hubbard Seery, and herself) at the First Baptist Church, Urbana, where she was a lifelong member. She also taught Sunday School at the First Baptist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert K. AND E. Faye Hubbard, Urbana, a sister, Margaret Hubbard Carl and two nephews. She is survived by sisters Elizabeth (late husband Raymond), Dorothy (Bill) Skidmore, and Nancy (Victor) Backeberg, her Aunt Frances Hubbard, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, a great-nephew and numerous cousins. The funeral will be at 2:00PM May 20 at the First Baptist Church, Urbana . Visitation will be from 1:00PM until time of the service. Renner-Wikoff is handling local arrangements. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Urbana.
