Obituary

Jonathan Moreland, 66, of Champaign, transitioned peacefully at 1:13 p.m.
on Friday, July 10, 2026, at Carle Foundation Hospital, surrounded by his
loving family.


He was born in Champaign on September 30, 1959, to George Guston and
Frances Novella (Brooks) Moreland. Jonathan is survived by his son,
Michael Miles of Urbana; sisters, Florence Powell of Las Vegas, Nevada,
and Judy Motley of Richardson, Texas; brothers, James T. Smith of St.
Louis, James H. Moreland of Denver, Colorado, and Jerry G. Moreland of
Urbana, Illinois; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-
nephews, and cousins.


He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Frances; sisters,
Barbara Williamson and Mrytle Portis; and brothers, Virgil Moreland and
George Moreland Jr.


Jonathan graduated from Urbana High School and became an
accomplished landscaper in Champaign, Illinois, and Richardson, Texas. In
his free time, Jon could often be found on the basketball court. Known as
"Old School," he earned the nickname because, regardless of his age, he
could still school anyone on the court. He was also a member of The
Potter's House.


Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, at Renner-
Wikoff Chapel, 1900 Philo Road, Urbana, IL 61802. The funeral service will
take place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 20, at Love Corner
Church, 312 E. Bradley Ave., Champaign, IL, with visitation at the church
from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. before the service. Apostle Theodore Freeman
will officiate. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana, IL.
