Jolene Ann McGrogan, 72, passed peacefully at home on Nov. 9, 2014 at 10:43 p.m. with her devoted husband, Don, by her side.
Jolene was born on January 13, 1942 in Streator, Illinois to Sidney DeVon Myers and Josephine Ann Moreschi. She graduated from Urbana High School and the University of Illinois.
Following graduation, Jolene taught for years at Leal School in Urbana before founding the first College for Kids at Parkland Community College. Thereafter, she served as the Director of the Gifted Area Service Center and later as the Director of Women's Studies at Parkland.
Jolene was active in and deeply committed to giving back to her community. She served on the Board of Directors for the YMCA, the Urbana Free Library and Illinois CASA. Jolene served as a devoted CASA volunteer for years and was recognized as its outstanding volunteer in 2002. In her spare time, she loved gardening, reading, knitting, yoga and travel.
Jolene was a devoted member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She served as the Chair of the Women of St. Pat's, helped with the St. Vincent DePaul dinners, the Cellar-to-Garret sales and the cookie and basket sale in December.
Jolene is survived by her devoted husband of 41 years, Donald, her two children, Brian Spano, (Ruth) of Denver, CO, and Chris Spano of Alameda, CA, four grandchildren, Thomas, Jack, Angelo and Rocco as well as her brother, John Scott Myers (Kate) and sister, Mary Susan Myers. Jolene was loved by her family, friends and colleagues. She gave freely of her time and love to others and her loss will be deeply felt by many.
There will be a Celebration of Life Mass at St. Patrick's Church, Urbana at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 21st with Fr. Joe Hogan officiating. Followed by a Celebration of Life gathering at Stone Creek Golf Club, Urbana, Il from 12:00 noon - 3:00 p.m.
Jolene served as a mentor to students in the CU One-To-One Program. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the Jolene McGrogan Memorial Scholarship Fund at Busey Bank or via jolenemcgroganmemorialscholarshipfund.com. All contributions will be used to assist students to achieve their higher education goals.
