URBANA, IL- John Otis McWethy, 83, of Urbana, died at 5:10 P.M., Thursday, September 9, 2010 at Provena Medical Center, Urbana.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 P.M., Sunday, September 12, 2010 at the Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana, IL 61802.
Mr. McWethy was born March 26, 1927 in Champaign, a son of Orville and Bessie (Gilley) McWethy. He married Mildred Clark on November 1, 1953 in Champaign. She survives. Also surviving are 3 sons, Kenneth(Elena) McWethy of Champaign, James McWethy of Mahomet, and John Otis(Terese) McWethy, Jr. of Bondville; two daughters, Nancy "Mac" McWethy of The Villages, Fla., and Janet(Bernie) LaValle of Urbana. 4 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and a sister, Reba Bates of Champaign, also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Virginia and a brother, Orville Keith.
Mr. McWethy served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Goodehue. He was a sheet metal worker for Union Local 218C in Champaign, and he taught the sheet metal apprenticeship program for the union. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren, V.F.W. Post 630, and AMVETS Post 3. He was a 60 year member of the Union Local 218C and he enjoyed teaching the apprenticeship program, where his students were nationally recognized in various sheet metal contests. He was an avid Illini, Cubs and Bears fan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to V.F.W. Post 630.
