Obituary

John Francis Lovingfoss October 30, 1937 - October 24, 2015

John was born October 30th, 1937, at home in rural Philo, Champaign Co. Illinois to Richard M. Lovingfoss and Virginia (Brand) Lovingfoss. He passed away Saturday, October 24, 2015 from complications of heart surgery, with his wife and daughter at his side.

John graduated from Unity High School in Tolono, Illinois, where he played basketball. He went on to attend Southern Methodist University, the first in his immediate family to attend college, and graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1960. John embraced every aspect of academic and social life at SMU. He was an active member and officer of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, American Society of Civil Engineers and Chi Epsilon, an honorary engineering organization.

Upon graduation, John married the former Mary Kay Overbeck with whom a daughter, Barbara, was born in 1963. John later married Treva Lynn Morris in Houston.

John was well-known in the steel industry where his career spanned five decades. He began his career at Armco Steel as a salesman in Dallas and later Lubbock and then Houston. He relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma to continue his career with Sheffield Steel, where he retired in 2000 as VP of Sales and Marketing after 42 years of service. He and Treva moved to San Antonio in 2002 and he re-entered the steel business with CMC Steel Texas, a division of Commercial Metals Company. He retired again in 2012, serving a total of 52 years in the steel business. John was an active member of the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute where he served on various committees.

John enjoyed many hobbies and activities, including flying his plane, fishing, hunting and his primary love, golfing. John was talented (or lucky) enough to experience 3 holes - in- one, the last one coming at The Dominion in San Antonio, where he was a member.

John had an extremely joyous soul, happy life, and contagious positive outlook, and anyone who met him remembered him for his optimism and kind spirit.

John was preceded in death by his father, Richard M. Lovingfoss and brother Mark Lovingfoss. He is survived by his amazing mother Virginia Lovingfoss (aged 101) of Urbana, Illinois, his loving wife of 43 years, Treva of San Antonio, Texas, his daughter Barbara Mayfield of Austin, Texas, and by many cherished relatives in Illinois.

Private graveside services are planned for Tuesday, November 10 at 11:00 am at Locust Grove Cemetery in Philo, Illinois under the direction of Renner-Wikoff Funeral Services of Urbana, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, John would like donations to be made in his memory to SMU Second Century Campaign, The American Heart Association, or the charity of your choice.
