John L. Dill, 90, of Alpharetta, GA, formerly of Urbana and East St. Louis, IL, died Sunday, November 28, 2010, at the home of his daughter surrounded by his family. A memorial service will be 11: 00 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Urbana with a reception one half hour before service time. John was born on November 30, 1920, in East St. Louis, IL, son of Elmer and Lucy Dill. He attended Lafayette Elementary School and East St. Louis High School. He married Mary Jane Ryan on September 21, 1940, in East St. Louis. She preceded him in death in the summer of 2009. Also preceding him in death were his brother, Ernest Dill, of Granite City, IL; his daughter-in-law Joyce Ann Dill of Belleville, IL, and three nephews. John and Mary were the parents of John Dill, Jr. (Magdalena) of Springfield, IL; Pat (Joyce) Dill of Urbana; and Kathleen (Tom) Marlo of Alpharetta, GA. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; Lisa (Rick) Hummel of Florissant, MO; Gina (Joe) Thebeau of Afton, MO; Laura (Jim) Riemer of Springfield, IL; Stasi Kerschner of Inwood, WV; Ryan Dill of Champaign, IL; Jon Marlo, Christina Marlo, and Mary Catherine Marlo of Alpharetta, GA. John is also survived by five great grandchildren; Monica Morris, Alex and Paris Thebeau, and Jimmy and Olivia Riemer. John owned and operated the Dill Brother's Coal Company and retired as a driver for East St. Louis Citizen's Center. His passion was gardening and landscaping. His love of gardening was second only to his love for Mary Jane. A perfect day for John was working in his yard and his garden and listening to a Cardinal's baseball game.
