URBANA, IL- John C. Akers, 82, of Urbana, passed away at 3:05 P.M., Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL.

Mr. Akers was born January 12, 1929 in Champaign, IL, a son of John C. and Evelyn J. Johnson Akers. He graduated from Urbana High School and served in the United States Air Force. John was a fireman for Peoria-Eastern Railroad and owned and operated the Sailfin Pet Shop in Champaign for 23 years. He later worked for Carle Hospital as a shuttle bus driver and volunteered for the Carle Auxiliary, the American Red Cross, and the Champaign County Regional Planning Commission Senior Services programs.

Mr. Akers is survived by several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Mary Ellen Harvey (Akers) and a brother, Robert L. Akers.

There will be private graveside services for the family of Mr. Akers. He will be interred at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Sidney, IL. Renner-Wikoff Chapel, 1900 S. Philo Rd., Urbana, IL, is in charge of arrangements.
